The Family of John & Anna (Paget/Padgett) Teal/Teel
John
Teal was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina around 1792.
John may have been the son of Emanuel Loderick and Patsy (McHenry) Teal,
however I have not found enough strong evidence to prove this.
Several reports mention that John was a descendent of Edward Teal of
Baltimore, Maryland. Emanuel
Loderick Teal’s grandfather was Edward Teal, born 1680 in Baltimore.
It
is not know when John Teal first came to Covington County, but he appears in the
1830 census. Prior to this he
married Anna Paget, daughter of William and Elizabeth Paget, who was born
September 11, 1805. All of
the Teal children in later census records list their place of birth as Alabama,
and the oldest child John was born in 1829.
John
and Anna settled on land near the Teel Creek and raised a family of eight
children: 1. John b. 04/08/1829 d.
04/19/1865; 2. James b. 11/30/1830 d. 10/19/1904; 3. Richard b. 08/16/1833 d.
03/23/1918; 4. Elizabeth b. 1837; 5. Jane b. 01/27/1839 d. 1864; 6. William Teel
b. 1840 d. 1863; 7. Henry b. 1843 d. 10/22/1924; and 8. Martha Ann b.
01/17/1846.
At
some point John Teal’s name took on the present day spelling of Teel.
At the same time his wife’s family became known as Padgett.
John Teel lived out his days in Covington County in the Conecuh
community. He passed away on April
26, 1862 and was buried in the Teel Family cemetery. Anna moved to Texas with several of her children where she
passed away around 1880.
John
Teel, Jr. married Mary Mason. She
was born around 1855 in Alabama possibly to Coleman and Florenda Mason.
They had two children: Mary
Jane b. 1857 and James Richard b. 1860. John
and Mary had both passed away by the 1870 census.
At that time their children were living in the household of John’s
brother Henry along with Jane Teel’s children, Anna Paget Teel, and Bennett B.
Bass.
James
Teel married Nancy Bass who was born March 2, 1840 to Bennett and Mary (Hogg)
Bass. Nancy was one of the children
born to this union who married Teel siblings the others being Wilson Bennett
Bass, who married Jane Teel and Mary Bass, who married William Teel.
Nancy and James lived in the Conecuh community all of their lives had
eleven children: 1.
John Teel; 2. Bennett B. Teel; 3. William Riley Teel; 4. Elizabeth Teel;
5. Melvine “Sis” Teel; 6. Ann Teel; 7. Martha “Mat” Teel; 8. Henry Voyce
Teel; 9. Emmie Teel; 10. Nancy
Viola Teel; and 11. Bennett B.
Teel. James passed away on October
19, 1904 and Nancy Bass Teel died on April 26, 1916.
They are buried in the Teel Cemetery.
Richard
Teel married Nancy Adeline Hart, the daughter of William and Sarah (Herrington)
Hart. William was the son of Reubin
and Nancy Ann (Rigdon) Hart. Nancy
was born August 6, 1842. There is
no census records of this marriage prior to 1860, so it is assumed that they
were married after Richard moved to Texas about the same time as William and
Sarah Hart. Richard and Nancy Teel had a large family of eleven children:
1. James Richard; 2. John
William; 3. Henry J.; 4. Daniel J.; 5. Wiley Paget; 6.Sarah Ann; 7. Martha J.;
8.Thomas Florida; 9.Mittie Adaline; 10. Robert Erwin; and 11. Clara Catherine.
Richard passed away March 23, 1918 and Nancy died May 11, 1900.
Both are buried in the Teel Cemetery in Texas.
Jane
Teel married Wilson Bennett Bas, the son of Bennett and Mary (Hogg) Bass.
He was born on February 17, 1840 and died in 1865.
Jane passed away in 1864 leaving their two children Bennett Wilson and
William Riley in the care of Jane’s brother Henry.
William
Teel married Mary Bass, another child of Bennett and Mary Bass.
Her birth and death are unknown. This
couple had one child: William Henry
Teel born in 1863.
Henry
Teel and his wife Susan A. married between 1860 and 1870.
Susan was born around 1849. They
moved to Texas sometime after 1870. Seven
children were born to this union: 1.
Henry W.; 2. Mary Elizabeth; 3. Fred; 4. Ollie; 5. Jane; 6. Emma; and 7. Nora. Henry passed away on October 22, 1924 and his wife died
January 27, 1928.
